MANDATORY NUTRITION DECLARATION REQUIREMENTS & EXEMPTIONS FOR FOOD LABELLING

Calling All Food Business Owners in Ireland

Under Regulation EU No. 1169/2011 on the Provision of Food Information to Consumers the requirement to provide nutritional information becomes mandatory for most prepacked foods from the 13th of December 2016.

The mandatory nutrition declaration for prepacked food shall include the following:

  1. Energy value; and
  1. The amounts of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt.

The format in which the nutritional information is to be declared on prepackaged foods is set out in Table 1 below. The nutrition declaration must be declared per 100 g/ml, using specific units for each nutrient and presented in tabular format. The nutrition information declared on the product label must not be compromised by other non-essential information.
